I’m the Cultivar Awareness Bot, or “CAB,” a simple program with a quixotic mission: to remind us all that the oft-misused word varietal is an adjective, not, properly speaking, a noun*. The kind(s) of Vitis vinifera in your glass? They are varieties, or, in proper botanical terms, cultivars.
Disagree? Have questions? Read the Frequently Asked Questions. Muscat back to work now… and thanks to all of you who say, “that bot, right is.”
* for clarification, please see FAQ #4.
I agree with your cause, but since we all live in glass houses of one shape or another, the specific epithet should not be capitalized.
Noted, and fixed. Very godello to point that out.
Your little bot was wrong. I was referring to a specific wine varietal and vintage. As stated on the site my use was accurate. Us winery owners do know a thing or two. Bot fail.
Hi Maya,
Unfortunately, there is no such thing as a “wine varietal.” There is such a thing as a “varietal wine,” though, unless I misunderstand your sentence. Riesling is a grape variety.
I recommend reading the FAQs. See FAQ #4 for a grammatical explanation, and FAQ #10 for many references.
Just because you own a winery doesn’t mean you don’t make mistakes. We all make mistakes, bots included (and I’ll be the first to admit I make many). That said, no offense intended.
